The system uses a little balloon called a Ferret Head which is put into the leaking pipe and is connected to the main system through a cord. The balloon inflates and blocks off the water along the length of the pipe then begins to move forward. Behind the Ferret is the water, pressing against it while ahead is just air.
When the Ferret Head passes the leak, the built-up water behind it pushes out of the leak. This stops the movement of the Ferret, allowing technicians to quickly locate the leak. The device also comes with line tracing and a sonde that helps speed up locating the Ferret, even if the resulting leak isn’t immediately visible. Accurate to within a few millimetres, it can easily allow the associated control unit to find the Ferret and therefore the leak.

Another common complaint with find and fix services is that the amount of disruption caused to track the leak can seem excessive. Ferret leak locator, in many cases, can enter the pipe through a meter box without the need for the pipe to be excavated.
