How to shorten find and fix service times

broken pipework

When you offer a leak find and fix service, there is always a pressure to complete the job as quickly as possible and keep costs down for clients. But at the same time, you want to provide the best possible service and ensure the job is done properly. So, what steps can you take to shorten find and fix service times and keep customers happy?

New technology

Previously, finding leaks was something of a magic trick – you used all your experience and intuition along with some equipment to find the source of the leak. This was sometimes a quick process but other times took much longer and meant you had to charge the customer more for the service. This often leads to disgruntled customers and a lack of loyalty to your company.

But now, there is new technology that can take a quick and scientific approach to finding leaks that means fixing them is quicker and therefore costs to the client are kept to the bare minimum. Added to that is the perception that your company is cutting edge, using all the possible tools and therefore the bills you provide are justified and legitimate.

Ferret leak locator

One of the leading new innovations in leak detection is called the Ferret and has been proven to reduce leak finding times as well as increase customer confidence when the basics of the system is explained to them.

The system uses a little balloon called a Ferret Head which is put into the leaking pipe and is connected to the main system through a cord. The balloon inflates and blocks off the water along the length of the pipe then begins to move forward. Behind the Ferret is the water, pressing against it while ahead is just air.

When the Ferret Head passes the leak, the built-up water behind it pushes out of the leak. This stops the movement of the Ferret, allowing technicians to quickly locate the leak. The device also comes with line tracing and a sonde that helps speed up locating the Ferret, even if the resulting leak isn’t immediately visible. Accurate to within a few millimetres, it can easily allow the associated control unit to find the Ferret and therefore the leak.

Ensuring minimal disruption

Another common complaint with find and fix services is that the amount of disruption caused to track the leak can seem excessive. Ferret leak locator, in many cases, can enter the pipe through a meter box without the need for the pipe to be excavated. It also comes with a range of different fittings to ensure the technician can get the right one for the pipe in question.

The Ferret leak detector allows companies offering this kind of service to display innovative technology that is efficient, offers the minimal disruption and even allows customers to see what is going on. Customers who feel like they understand the process are more likely to be satisfied with the outcome and return if there is another problem, in the future.
